About the album

As I write these notes sitting on my balcony in July 2022, it has been more than 9 years since the release of my debut album un | ان and more than 11 years since it was recorded. The time since has been a personally tumultuous period of twists and turns – retreat, reflection, realization, reassessment, therapy, triumph, trial and error – entangled in a decade-long creative block that had me questioning whether I would ever be able to compose again. Though I felt there was so much I wanted and needed to say, I felt I had lost my voice, or perhaps never had one in the first place. A constant knot had grown tighter and tighter within me over time, but I did not understand what had created it or how it might be undone. In 2018, shaken awake by the collision of two transients, I suddenly saw in a new light old patterns whose familiar presences I realized I had felt for much of my life, but had until then never seen for what they were. Following a third, I finally found the humility to surrender, and as I began re-examining and confronting myself, I slowly started to discover new answers – and new questions to ask. Then the Covid-19 pandemic happened, and the world stopped. Like so many of us caught in the new eerie calm, I retreated into inner spaces. I began revisiting sketches of ideas I had accumulated over the years, and finally, very, very slowly, new music started to come.

In seiner Musik treffen die offenen Räume und die Stille der finnischen Arktis auf die Maqamat der arabischen Welt, den rhythmischen Reichtum Afrikas und Indiens und den improvisatorischen Geist des amerikanischen Jazz.
Er sucht nach einer neuen musikalischen Syntax sucht, die kulturelle Binaritäten in Frage stellt, indem sie die Gemeinsamkeiten zwischen den Kulturen erforscht und gleichzeitig die Unterschiede anerkennt.

„Während ich diese Zeilen im Juli 2022 auf meinem Balkon schreibe, sind mehr als 9 Jahre seit der Veröffentlichung meines Debütalbums un | ان und mehr als 11 Jahre seit den Aufnahmen vergangen. Die Zeit seither war für mich persönlich eine turbulente Zeit voller Wendungen - Rückzug, Reflexion, Erkenntnis, Neubewertung, Therapie, Triumph, Versuch und Irrtum - verstrickt in eine jahrzehntelange kreative Blockade, die mich daran zweifeln ließ, ob ich jemals wieder komponieren könnte. Obwohl ich das Bedürfnis hatte, so viel zu sagen, hatte ich das Gefühl, meine Stimme verloren zu haben, oder vielleicht nie eine gehabt zu haben. Ein ständiger Knoten war mit der Zeit immer fester in mir gewachsen, aber ich verstand nicht, was ihn ausgelöst hatte oder wie er sich auflösen ließe. Im Jahr 2018, wachgerüttelt durch den Zusammenprall zweier Veränderungen, sah ich plötzlich alte Muster in einem neuen Licht, deren vertraute Präsenz ich zwar einen Großteil meines Lebens gespürt, aber bis dahin nie als das erkannt hatte, was sie waren. Nach einem dritten Durchgang fand ich schließlich die Demut, mich zu ergeben, und als ich begann, mich selbst zu überprüfen und zu konfrontieren, begann ich langsam, neue Antworten zu entdecken - und neue Fragen zu stellen. Dann kam die Covid-19-Pandemie, und die Welt blieb stehen. Wie so viele von uns, die von der neuen unheimlichen Ruhe erfasst wurden, zog ich mich in innere Räume zurück. Ich begann, Skizzen von Ideen, die ich im Laufe der Jahre angesammelt hatte, wieder aufzugreifen, und schließlich, ganz, ganz langsam, begann neue Musik zu entstehen.“ Jussi Reijonen

Aufgewachsen in Finnisch-Lappland, Jordanien, Tansania, Oman und Libanon und einen Großteil seines Erwachsenenlebens in den Vereinigten Staaten, hat der Gitarrist und Oud-Spieler Jussi Reijonen ein Leben lang die Klänge, Sehenswürdigkeiten, Düfte und Schattierungen nordischer, nahöstlicher, afrikanischer und amerikanischer Kulturen aufgesogen, die sich in seiner Handschrift als Komponist und Interpret wiederspiegeln.

Er hat als Leiter, Kollaborateur, Komponist oder Arrangeur mit zahlreichen Künstlern aus der ersten Reihe zusammengearbeitet, unter anderem mit Jack DeJohnette, Pepe de Lucía, Javier Limón, David Fiuczynski, Simon Shaheen, Bassam Saba, Marcel Khalifé, Arto Tunçboyacıyan, Dave Weckl, Yazhi Guo, Louis de Mieulle / Matt Garstka (von Animals as Leaders), Hüsnu Şenlendirici und den New York Gypsy All-Stars und vielen anderen.

Als Pädagoge fördert und provoziert Jussi weiterhin den transkulturellen Dialog und das Gespräch über Grenzen und Disziplinen hinweg, jenseits der reinen Identitätspolitik.

In den 13 Jahren, in denen er in Boston und New York lebte, trat er bei renommierten Festivals und an Orten wie dem Lincoln Center und der Library of Congress sowie in Finnland, Schweden, Lettland, der Schweiz, Deutschland, Frankreich, den Niederlanden, dem Libanon und Kanada auf.

Jussis für den Independent Music Award nominiertes Debütalbum un | أن, das vom Magazin Guitar Player als "außergewöhnliche Musik" beschrieben wurde, erschien 2013 unter großem Beifall der Kritiker auf seinem Label unmusic.
Sein lang erwartetes Nachfolgealbum Three Seconds | Kolme Toista - eine lange Suite für ein neues transkulturelles 9-köpfiges Ensemble mit ihm als Leiter, vereint Musiker aus Jordanien/Irak, Palästina, der Türkei, Japan und den Vereinigten Staaten (die unter anderem mit Herbie Hancock, Roy Haynes, Terence Blanchard, Danilo Pérez, Simon Shaheen, Snarky Puppy und Yo-Yo Ma aufgetreten sind). Es erscheint im Oktober 2022 bei Challenge Records erscheinen.

Neben seiner Arbeit als Leader ist er Co-Leiter von Sawaari, einem Quintett, das die Verbindung von indischen Rhythmen, arabischem Maqamat und Trance-Musik aus Nordafrika und Süditalien erforscht, arbeitet mit der Schweizer Sängerin Gabriela Martina zusammen, ist Mitglied des New York Arabic Orchestra und setzt seine Arbeit als Pädagoge in den USA und Europa fort.
